To be frank, we’d let The Hill-Side re-upholster our favourite bucket chair and play interior decorator to our studio any day, so it’s probably suiting to tell you that they’ve just done a design collaboration with CB2 in the States. Looking at the finished product, one could only best describe it as a little taste of ‘maison THS’, and it just works like a peanut and jelly sandwich.
Expect a collection of The Hill-Side’s woven and printed textiles that we fell in love with in previous seasons, re-appropriated, dissected and put back together again in the name of cleverness. They’ve played with so many design elements like scale, tone, and pattern to bring something familiar yet totally new to the table, like applying a dot-y pattern over their familiar prints, or playing with totally new mediums like the hand-knotted rug. What a design delight. This takes guts to re-visit past prints in this kind of detail, but somehow they have brought out even more of their own personality into motionless objects, we could say that they have personified the humble bed, cushion, rug, and bathroom towel.
So lets run you through what they’ve tampered with: rugs, bedding, upholstered furniture, pillows, floor cushions, wallpaper, and bath towels. They cleverly designed a “Disintegrated Floral Print” rug and floor cushion, which to us is like an exotic Rousseau still life rubbed against-the-grain into a crafted rug [pictured below]. We’ll also take one of the Chambray Club Sofas, made in the US, and upholstered in what looks like The Hill-Side’s classic indigo chambray; more of that tropical flora for the bed; a Parlour Chair covered in palm leaves (adorned with a heavily textured interpretation of one of their all-time favorite Japanese indigo fabrics); Turkish towels made to look like they’re edged in oversized selvedge; and that deliciously meaty Workwear Blanket Stripe Dhurrie Pillow which we would lounge on wearing a pair of their blanket striped kicks from THS’ winter shoe collection to make an absurdists’ dream portrait.
Feast your eyes on the hard work and dedication set by a family of visually inclined overachievers, who just dropped their first home collection chez CB2. Proud as a peacock, and we definitely need some of that wallpaper.
