Let me start by introducing to you my number one bacon & egg roll in Sydney. Two eggs, cooked until just done, with the yolks slightly broken so that you get a little yolk and a little white in every mouthful, and bacon that is thinly sliced, smokey, and crispy on the edges with the perfect amount of fat: all sandwiched between a soft, white roll. I give you, the Bowens’ bacon & egg roll at Orange Grove Organic Markets on a Saturday morning. I took this weekly indulgence for granted when I lived in Sydney, but living overseas has made me appreciate the good things in life such as the happiness that bacon and eggs can bring. Another thing that I admire now that I am back in town is the amazing produce that Australia has to offer, all on show at the weekend farmer’s markets. Orange Grove Markets is prime real-estate for farmers and entrepreneurs to sell their goods to city dwellers who are hungry for a taste of honest produce, that has come straight from the source. This is where I try to buy all of my groceries for the week, the highlights being organic fruit & vegetables, pastured meat, biodynamic eggs, grass fed Jersey milk dairy, and flowers. At this time of the year (winter) pine mushrooms, heirloom root vegetables, kales, brassicas, forest berries, apples, quinces, and pears are what I look forward to. Oh and to make things even better, there are always plenty of cute puppies hanging out for pat too!

Yes, I do realise that the roll pictured above is upside-down but I was too concerned with eating my delicious breakfast sandwich to care about anything else! Upon further investigation, I discovered that these bacon & egg bad-boys have other weekend stalls at Kings Cross and Marrickville Organic Markets. Bowens’ have even attracted media attention with features in The Sydney Morning Herald and Monocle Magazine.
