Down under it’s like opposite land, it’s winter right now. How nice for me to escape the constant heat and humidity of life on the equator, to get some quality time in the cold… I like getting a cold pink nose! It probably sounds strange to some people that I would willingly take myself out of the warm to a wintery landscape, but there is so much that I love about winters in Australia. The colours of winter are muted, providing a bit of a break for the eyes. A wintery colour palette in Oz embraces all of the elegantly cool greys, blues, and greens. We get hints of soft purple, brought by the radiantly rising sun to welcome us to dormant days where even the sky is tucked into it’s cozy cloud blanket. For me, this is the best time of year to be catching waves. Winter waves on the East coast are the most enjoyable. Yes, your mits and flippers get a little cold, and the occasional brain freeze hits you by surprise, but it’s truly a wonderful time and place to be riding kinetic energy brought by the heating of the Earth. Part of the fun is the hunt for the perfect spot, where there are no others to share your waves with (except your pals, but they’re extra floating fun) and from the shore, you can picture yourself on a nice little wave breaking just out to sea. Waiting in the car are some blankets and a flask of hot tea waiting for your return in shivery shades of white and blue, wearing a purple lip tint that you picked up from the icy wind.
